Improve Your IB Results & Reach Your Academic Goals
Study Academy Vienna supports students who want to retake their IB exams, improve individual subject grades, or increase their overall IB points score. Whether you need to meet the requirements for the IB Diploma, improve a specific subject grade, or achieve higher results for university admission, an IB exam retake gives you another opportunity to reach your academic goals. Students may also be able to retake or resubmit IB coursework and core components, including Internal Assessments (IAs), the Extended Essay (EE) and Theory of Knowledge (TOK), depending on the component and the relevant IB requirements.
For the past several years, we have successfully supported students through the IB exam retake process. Many students have come to us looking to build on their original results and have gone on to achieve higher grades after focused preparation. Seeing our students improve their IB results and feel confident about their next academic step has made IB retake support an important part of what we do.
Students receive guidance through the official IB retake registration process and are referred to an authorised IB World School for registration. Study Academy Vienna then provides personalised IB retake preparation with experienced IB Teachers, IB Examiners and IB Tutors, tailored to each student’s previous performance and individual academic goals.
Our IB retake support is available for students preparing for May and November IB examination sessions and is tailored to the subjects they are retaking, their previous performance and their individual target grades. Your previous IB results do not have to be your final results.
How the IB Retake Process Works with Study Academy Vienna
The IB retake process involves several important steps, from reviewing your previous IB results and arranging official registration to preparing effectively for your next IB examination session. Study Academy Vienna guides students through the process and provides personalised IB retake preparation once their examination plans are confirmed.
From the first discussion about your previous IB results to your final exam preparation, our aim is to make the process clear and help you focus on what you need to improve. With targeted preparation and individual support, you can approach your IB retake exams with greater knowledge, confidence and exam readiness.

May & November IB Exam Retake Sessions
IB exam retakes can be taken in a future May or November examination session, depending on the subjects being retaken, IB requirements and subject availability. This gives students the opportunity to improve individual IB subject grades, increase their overall IB points score or work towards meeting the requirements for the IB Diploma. Available subjects and the appropriate IB retake session are confirmed with the IB Coordinator.
Students are no longer limited to a maximum of three IB examination sessions. IB removed the previous three-session rule in 2023, meaning students can register for future May or November IB exam sessions if further retakes are needed. Students should also be aware that IB subject curricula and assessment requirements may change between sessions, and current requirements must be followed.
IB retakes are not limited to written examinations. Depending on the component and current IB requirements, students may also be able to retake or resubmit assessed coursework and core components. Requirements for Internal Assessments (IAs) are confirmed individually with the IB Coordinator and may depend on the subject and examination session. The Extended Essay (EE) and Theory of Knowledge (TOK) may also form part of a student’s IB retake plans. Requirements for resubmission or improvement should be confirmed with the IB Coordinator before preparation begins.
When a subject or core requirement is retaken, the highest grade achieved contributes towards the award of the IB Diploma, subject to IB regulations. An IB exam retake therefore gives students another opportunity to improve subject grades, increase their overall IB points score, and potentially achieve the results required for university admission.
IB Subjects Available for Retake Preparation
If the IB subject you wish to retake is not listed in the table, please specify the subject when you contact us. Individual guidance with Internal Assessments (IAs), the Extended Essay (EE), and Theory of Knowledge (TOK) is also available and can be specified when contacting us. We will confirm the available preparation and support based on your individual requirements.
Choose Your IB Subjects
Students can choose from a wide range of IB Diploma Programme subjects at Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL). Students may select 1–6 main IB subjects during registration, as well as additional optional IB courses and academic support.

Personalised IB Retake Tutoring with Experienced IB Teachers
Preparing for an IB exam retake requires more than simply revising the same material again. Study Academy Vienna provides personalised IB retake tutoring designed around each student’s previous results, individual areas for improvement and target grades. Our experienced IB Teachers, IB Examiners and IB Tutors work with students to identify knowledge gaps, strengthen difficult topics and develop a more effective approach to IB examination questions. Lessons focus on both subject knowledge and the exam techniques needed to apply that knowledge successfully under examination conditions.
IB Retake Tutoring Can Include:
- Targeted revision of difficult syllabus topics
- Identification of knowledge gaps and areas for improvement
- Extensive IB past-paper and exam-question practice
- Understanding IB mark schemes and assessment criteria
- Guidance on examiner expectations and command terms
- Improving answer structure and examination technique
- Timed Paper 1, Paper 2 and Paper 3 practice, depending on the subject
- Strategies for avoiding common examination mistakes
- Personalised feedback based on previous performance
- Individual guidance with IAs, the Extended Essay (EE) and Theory of Knowledge (TOK) for students retaking or resubmitting these components
Individual Support That Makes a Difference
Every IB retake student has different strengths, areas for improvement and academic goals. Our tutoring is therefore adapted to the individual student rather than following a standard revision programme. Teachers focus on the topics, examination papers and skills that had the greatest impact on the student’s previous IB results.
Over the years, students and parents have regularly praised the individual attention, experienced teachers and personal support they receive from Study Academy Vienna. For retake students in particular, having a teacher who understands their previous results and knows exactly where to focus can make the preparation much more targeted and effective.
Whether the goal is to improve one subject grade, increase the overall IB points score, or achieve the results required for university admission, our aim is to help students approach their IB retake exams with stronger knowledge, better exam technique, and greater confidence.
